As is often the case with Marcelo’s work, we find a horizontal line that acts as a focal point in many of his series. Above and below which, large fields of colour; cool and dark blues, dark purples, yellows and blacks are seen to interact with lighter hues.
Completed over a number of weeks and with many layers of paint painstakingly applied, Marcelo’s paintings invite an active relationship between the observer and the canvas. They act as a catalyst for contemplation of places and memories with their many layers, alluring textures, spatial depth and meditative power.
In terms of the finished body of work, you can see a notable progression from the previous series "Paisaje Recurrente". There are more elements of tranquility, greater use of space, and colours which hold more depth. Marcelo attributes much of this development in style to his newfound calmness of mind in part thanks to his milestone birthday of 50.
Each painting in this new series is named after a significant year in Marcelo’s life.
